Cal Smith "The Country Bumpkin"

April 7, 1932 ~ October 10, 2013

Country music legend, Cal Smith, passed away at his home in Branson, Mo. on October 10, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, a son, Calvin, 5 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Born Grant Calvin Shofner in Gans, Oklahoma,  but raised in California, Smith started in the music business as a young man and was playing professionally at local venues in San Francisco by age 15. Later, he served 2 years in the military earning an honorable discharge. Cal left the West Coast to become a member of his idol, Grand Ole Opry Star Ernest Tubb's band, The Texas Troubadours. He worked with Tubb as a rhythm guitarist,  vocalist and master of ceremonies until 1968. When he left the band, he went on to enjoy a successful solo career throughout the late 1960's and 70's cementing his reputation as a legend in the business. He lit up the charts with his 1970's hits such as "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking" and "I've Found Someone of My Own" before landing his 1974 No.1 hit sensation "Country Bumpkin", which earned him both song and single of the year from the Country Music Association. His final No.1 song "It's Time To Pay The Fiddler" arrived in 1975. Cal continued to chart singles for MCA records, making the Top 15 with songs such as "She Talked Alot About Texas", "Jason's Farm" and "I Just Came Home To Count The Memories". He retired in 1986 after his making his last record, "Stories of Life" in 1986. He and his family moved to Branson, Mo. in the early 1990's and made the Ozarks their home. A memorial service to honor his life and great works will be held at The God and Country Theatre in Branson, Mo. on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 1-2:30pm. Cremation and services are under the direction of Cremations of the Ozarks.
