Virgil Lee Caruth, age 78, of Hollister, Missouri,
(formerly of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Clarinda, Iowa) passed away March 27, 2021,
at home with his wife and friends. Services will be held Saturday, April 10,
2021 at 3:00 p.m. in Iowa Falls, Iowa, with Ward Richards of Owasa, Iowa,
officiating. Services and burial will be at Northlawn Memory Gardens in Iowa
Falls, with military honors performed by Legion Post #188.
Virgil was born December 23, 1942, to Clifford and Ida
(Riley) Caruth. He attended Alden and Iowa Falls schools, graduating from Iowa
Falls in 1961. In August of 1961, Virgil joined the United States Navy, serving
four years, then serving in the United States Navel Reserves until 1967.
He graduated from barber school in 1967 and barbered many
years in Iowa Falls at The Hub and The Head Shed. In 1977, he went to work for
Iowa Electric/Alliant Energy, working for twenty-five years in Iowa Falls,
Eldora, and Clarinda. He was a member of the American Legion Post #188 Iowa
Falls, Iowa.
On July 3, 1971, Virgil was united in marriage to Norma
Jean Hansen at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden, Iowa.
They resided in Iowa Falls, moving later to Clarinda in 1989. Virgil and Norma
moved to Hollister, Missouri, in 2004 where they built a new home on Table Rock
Lake.
We have lost a wonderful and generous man. Virgil loved
all his children and grandchildren very much. He loved life, enjoying every moment.
Virgil would go fishing, have cookouts with friends, or kick back and spend
time with his best friend Jenny (his dog that adopted him when he started building
their dream retirement home, near Branson, Missouri). Virgil spent his life
working: even before retirement he was busy remodeling their many homes or doing
projects for friends, and he sure had a lot of friends. He didn’t know a
stranger and could always find something good in everyone. He wouldn’t miss a
chance to “coffee” whenever he could. We’re all going to miss his big smile,
but our memories will keep him in our hearts forever.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Norma; four
children: Steve Caruth and wife, Darnell of Keizer, Oregon, Sandi Halladay and
husband, Sunny of Longview, Washington, Matt Jorgensen Caruth of Hollister,
Missouri, and Tawnia. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, including Tia
Bloh; nine great-grandchildren, including Sophie and Emma Griffen; sister, Beth
Vieth of Iowa Falls, Iowa; and two sister-in-laws, Sharon Caruth and Shirley
Caruth both of Iowa Falls, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Clifford and Ida;
three brothers: Merton Caruth, Glen Caruth, and Dale Caruth; and three sisters:
Myrna Campbell Crooks, Lillian Thies, and Peggy Slagle.
